WALKING

The Alpujarra and Sierra Nevada are outstanding walking areas.
With height differences of 450m up to 3482m (Mulhacén) and as an effect of this; the difference in temperature, flora and fauna and difficulty make the area interesting for walkers at all stages.

The area was declared a Biosphere reserve in 1986 by UNESCO. This is because of the great botanic diversity and the quality of the ecological culture. There are about 2100 plant species and the air is one of the cleanest in Europe. A part of the Alpujarra and Sierra Nevada is a National Park.

There are various walking routes set out like the GR-7, Gr-142 and the Senderos Locales which can be followed by well marked signs. There are also many routes which can easly be walked by map.
Various guides offer themselves in this area who have either discovered their own routes or can guide you through (more risky) higher areas. In the winter period, for example, Spanish Highs offers snow walking routes.
Further we are in touch with Martin Riley, a qualified mountain guide. He knows exiting routes which run through Indiana Jones-like vistas. He also has strenuous routes, for the adventurous walker, which includes scrambling on high mountain ridges.

During walks you will be surrounded by the scent of thyme, rosemary, lavender or mint. In the low mountains you'll walk past almond-, fig- and citrus trees and the century old big olive trees. Higher up you will come across chestnuts and fir-trees.
The chance that you will see animals and birds is very big. The national park has the biggest population of the Spanish Ibex in Andalusia. Other mammals you can admire in this area are wild boar, foxes, badgers and in higher parts weasels. Apart from that the park is a sanctuary for many birds, more than 60 species, of which eagles, falcons and vultures.
During the walks many butterflies flutter by of which there are more then 120 species in existence.

Various walking routes run across villages which were once built by the Moors. Villages like Capileira, Bubión and Pampaneira. Picturesque white mountain villages of which the houses are built "stair wise" against each other. The flat roofs with characteristic high chimneys are very photogenic.
